In US, if the prediction says rain/snow at 2.00 -5.00 PM it starts exactly at 2 and ends at 5. People plan their entire day based on that information and here we are not even close to that.

IMD is completely hopeless. I have wondered is there a point as to why they exist, they can as well shut down and save tax payers' money getting wasted. I have seen people using weather apps to determine whether it's a good time to go for a jog in US. They forecast the exact hour (and what part of the hour) it will rain and they plan their outdoor routines accordingly. Here in India, we have almost sixty to eighty years of monsoon data and yet IMD cannot predict anything reliably. Forget about day to day rain, this year there was some much hoopla about monsoon having arrived in May and ahead by two weeks. But there was no forecast that monsoon would arrive ahead of time. After it arrives, every newspaper and website will report that it arrived early as if you live in a cave and had to read newspapers to know that it rained outside. Even now, there were reports that monsoon will resume around Jun 10th, today is 11th and there is no sign of rains. Not to speak of their website, it is staid and unfriendly. The only thing IMD pretty much does is record daily rainfall and weather. They do nothing more, nothing less.

It's the same old government institution problem, every government institution in India is a shithole.

The problem is that there are no consequences if the predictions go wrong.

In a private company, if you suck at your work, if your performance is lacklustre, you are shown where the exit door is.

In the case of these government institutions &amp; PSUs, there are no consequences at all for the shitty work of these low level scoundrels.

Firstly it's a prediction and the models used by Met dept cover a larger area as compared to the US where you could get block wise weather reports which cover maybe a small sector.
If its predicts rain in mumbai... It may not rain in my area but would have rained somewhere else. 

Govt funds for such research is very less and hence comparing it to US doesn't make sense at all. 

You need high computing machines for this and I believe Met just has one or two of it.

When IMD says chance of rain,it means there's a statistical probability, not a certainity.

For eg: 60% chance of rain; means that in 6 out of 10 similar conditions, it rained in the past not that it will rain today.

PS: India lacks modern geo-tech because of underfunding ;therefore predictions are inaccurate compared to developed economics.

I never ever trust these IMD guys when it comes to predicting rains. A guy on X named weatherman of Mumbai used to give accurate updates until last year. I haven't checked him out this time though. But his predictions were always spot on.

1. **Outdated Drainage System:**

This seems to be near dadar area and it does not look like garbage thrown by public but rather the debris of the street vegetable and flower vendors. 

Bmc do earn lot of hafta from these guys and due to street vendor there is lot of chaos near most stations in Mumbai.

They cleared out the drains over 2 weeks back and have not cleared away the febris which is piked next to the drains holes.With the rains it all goes back again

Near my place , they cleaned the drains right before the rain started but they left the debris right next to the drains. They never picked it up and now when the rains have started, all the debris has gone into the drains and clogged it right back up.

Because in every other city in the world they start cleaning all known water clogging areas in advance.

When the first rain fell in Mumbai, the various areas should immediately clean all the drains in main areas from leaves etc. 

And of course that would still not be enough due to incessant littering of the street by cultural habit of certain people but would still be better.

At least the trees would not shed new leaves so fast.
